Further payroll tax relief planned for Queensland GP practices

15 October 2024

In an earlier update – Payroll Tax Amnesty for GPs – we reported on the Queensland Government’s decision to apply a payroll tax amnesty, on GP payments to contracted general practitioners, until mid-2025.

In separate announcements both Labor and the LNP have, if elected, committed to exempting GP practices from payroll tax, on payments to contracted general practitioners, when the amnesty ends.

If followed through, Queensland could become the first State or Territory in Australia to permanently exempt GP practices from payroll tax on payments to contracted general practitioners.

As advocates for the medical industry, we hope this delivers long-awaited clarity and relief for GP practices and their professional advisors, who have been navigating the uncertainty surrounding payroll tax liability for GP practices for many years.

Naturally the devil is always in the detail and, with the Queensland election fast approaching, we will continue to monitor the status of the exemption and provide updates as they become available.
